Super Talent Launches Co-Branded Toshiba SSDs
SATA-II UltraDrive DX SSDs Include Advanced new Security Features
San Jose, California – October 6, 2009 Super Talent Technology, a leading manufacturer of Flash storage solutions and DRAM memory modules, today announced the new co-branded UltraDrive DX SSDs that offer two levels of security to prevent unauthorized data theft or loss. Co-branded Toshiba, the new UltraDrive DX SSDs will be sold through Super Talent’s North American retail and distribution channel starting this week.
As a first level of security the UltraDrive DX supports password protection with an encrypted password. This blocks malicious hackers from accessing the data stored on the SSD. As a second level of protection the DX incorporates new hardware data randomization technology. Data randomization happens automatically with every write to the drive to prevent unauthorized copying of blocks of data. Both encrypted password protection and data randomization are standard features that do not affect performance.
UltraDrive DX SSDs include sophisticated ECC and wear leveling algorithms for superior reliability and extended endurance. The DX has passed intensive testing with a gamut of hardware and software configurations to ensure unmatched reliability. While the DX was designed primarily for exceptional security and reliability, it is also surprisingly fast, and is specified to support sequential read speeds of up to 230 MB/sec and sequential write speeds of up to 180 MB/sec.

WiTricity brings Tesla’s dream A new system that will allow laptops, mobile phones and televisions to be left unplugged in the home while being recharged, has been unveiled by a US company. WiTricity can send electricity “wirelessly” through the air and can switch on a light bulb or keep a computer running thanks to a new development in physics. The outfit hopes to do away with mountains of disposable batteries and miles of wiring required to charge gizmos and computers. Unlike a Tesla device which has the same vision, energy is largely transferred through magnetic fields without the need for great flashes of lightning. Boffin Marin Soljacic at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, developed the system after he was woken up three nights in a row by his mobile telling him it had a low battery. His theory was to use resonance to make it all happen. Resonance means that when two objects have the same resonant frequency, they exchange energy without having an effect on surrounding objects. WiTricity uses the resonance of low-frequency electromagnetic waves and transfers energy between two magnetic coils. The first coil is placed in a box attached to a home’s electricity mains, and can be embedded in a wall or ceiling. The second coil is attached to a device such as a television or laptop. Electromagnetic waves are transferred between the two coils and the second coil absorbs energy. The Institute of Physics in London confirmed that the technology was safe, as it used a magnetic field that “had no detrimental effects on the human body”. Unfortunately it only works on smaller devices which must be within two metres of a wall that provides wireless power. Later it is hoped that the range can be extended to as much as 30 metres. |

Word is they are going under again Our sources are whispering to us that unless some sort of miracle happens quickly and VisionTek gets a rather large infusion of cash, the company is expected to officially announce that they will file for bankruptcy. While the company has yet to confirm anything specific, it is not at all unexpected, as graphics card manufacturers are struggling to make it in these difficult economic conditions; and this has led companies to struggle that have a core business of just selling video cards. VisionTek is not the only video card company that is in difficulty, and from the whispers that we are hearing it might not be the last if these companies are not able to change their business model to sell more than video cards. Slim PS3 is confirmed

Will wait for Tokyo Game Show for launch As we expected, the new slim PlayStation 3 has been confirmed by our sources; and again as expected, you can pretty much take to the bank the fact that we will not be seeing Sony launch it at E3. Instead of an E3 launch, Sony will wait for the Tokyo Game Show to launch the latest revision of the PlayStation 3 console. The decision to delay the launch of the new version of the PlayStation 3 has more to do with the fact that Sony has plenty of PlayStation 3 consoles still in the channel and sitting in warehouses. It is necessary to move this inventory before bringing out the new version of the console. It is expected now that once the new slim version of the PlayStation 3 is launched, Sony will cut the price on the PS3; but according to whispers, it could be only a temporary thing as the price decrease might only apply to older versions of the console that are left in inventory. A second reduction could then come toward holiday time on the slim version once the remaining inventory of the older consoles is depleted. Sony is expected to focus on the PlayStation 3 new bundle at E3 that we told you about previously, as well as the new PSP. |

The 6Gbps transfer rate The Serial ATA International Organization has finally made the third-generation SATA interface official. It provides maximum transfer speed of 6 Gb/s and comes with many other enhancements as well. The new SATA 3.0 is backwards compatible with all the previous standards. The new enhancements or features, if you like to call them like that, include a new Native Command Queuing (NCQ) streaming command for isochronous data transfers, NCQ Management that optimizes performance by enabling host processing and management of outstanding NCQ commands, improved power management capabilities, a small Low Insertion Force (LIF) connector for 1.8-inch drives, a connector for 7mm optical disk drives for thin and light notebooks, and alignment with the INCITS ATA8-ACS standard. We already saw some draft versions of the standard, and we are quite sure that some manufacturers will show their first SATA 6Gbps devices at Computex. |
Circuit City lives again

New owner Circuit City has gone through a difficult period, closing its doors in the process, but now it’s been brought back to life. It was purchased by Systemax Inc. on May 19th 2009 for about $6.5 million, and it seems like this company isn’t keen on letting Circuit City go to waste. Furthermore, since the purchase included the customer records of the original Circuit City, Systemax is asking users whether they want their “personally identifiable information” transferred to the new Circuit City. Note however that this does not include credit card data or other financial info. Users who chose to opt-out before June 9th will have their info purged and will no longer receive Circuit City e-mails. This doesn’t mean that the stores will be reopened, as there’s no mention of it, but it does mean that the brand will stick around. The company is touting the new Circuit City with “Lower Prices, Wider Selection, Faster Shipping, World Class Service”, and while we wish them luck, we’ll still reserve our judgment until we see Circuit City firmly afloat. You can read the new Circuit City’s launch notes here. |
Noctua NF-S12B premium fan
Vienna, April 21st 2009 – Noctua today introduced the new NF-S12B 120mm premium fan. Succeeding the vastly successful NF-S12, the NF-S12B is a next generation quiet fan featuring Noctua’s advanced SCD2 technology as well as a highly optimised blade geometry with Bevelled Blade Tips that improves its award-winning predecessor’s airflow efficiency by up to 10%.
“Our popular NF-S12 series is renowned for its excellent airflow/noise ratio, so further improving it was by no means an easy feat”, explains Mag. Roland Mossig, Noctua CEO. “It took us quite a lot of time and effort, but we couldn’t be happier with the result. The new NF-S12B doesn’t only provide more airflow at the same noise level than the original NF-S12, it also produces higher static pressure.”
Building on the proven basis of the original NF-S12 impeller, the design goal for the NF-S12B was to further improve its predecessor’s much acclaimed airflow/noise ratio and to increase static pressure in order to allow for a broader range of applications. These goals have been achieved by reducing the tip clearance at the leading edge and adding Bevelled Blade-Tips, a feature first introduced with the NF-B9 92mm fan.
In addition to its highly optimised impeller design, the NF-S12B features Noctua’s time-tested premium quality SSO-Bearing as well as Smooth Commutation Drive 2, the latest version of Noctua’s advanced drive system that ensures superb running smoothness by eliminating torque variations and switching noises.
The NF-S12B is available in two versions: Whereas the FLX (Flexibility) version provides 1200, 900 and 600 rpm speed settings via the supplied Low-Noise and Ultra-Low-Noise Adapters in order to fine-tune it for superior airflow or maximum quietness, the ULN (Ultra-Low-Noise) version with 700/500rpm speed settings is tailor made for silent enthusiasts who demand super-slow running speeds and utmost quietness of operation.
Pricing and Availability:
The NF-S12B FLX and NF-S12B ULN are available immediately at a suggested retail price of EUR 19.90 / USD 24.90.
About Noctua:
Designed in Austria, Noctua’s premium cooling components are internationally renowned for their superb quietness, exceptional performance and thoroughgoing quality. Having received more than 800 awards and recommendations from leading hardware websites and magazines, Noctua’s fans and heatsinks are chosen by more than a hundred thousand satisfied customers around the globe.

The Pirate Bay members get 1 year in prison
| Written by Lars-Göran Nilsson | |

Damages of up to €2.7 million This is a very unusual ruling in Sweden and it’s the first time ever someone has been given a prison sentence for file sharing, anywhere in the world as far as we’re aware. The reason behind the prison sentence and the high fines are according to the court statement because the Pirate Bay has promoted the spreading of copyrighted materials in a significant way and it was also deemed that the Pirate Bay had been run as a commercial business with intent to make a profit. Carl Lundströms lawyer is calling it a “grave failure of justice” while Fredrik Neijs lawyer is surprised at the verdict and goes on to say that “30 million SEK is an enormous amount”. Details seemed to have leaked from the court late last night, as Peter Sunde was expecting them to lose based on information he’d been given last night. Considering that the Pirate Bay only has made about 10 million SEK (about €900,000) according to the prosecutor, although this was a low estimation, one has to wonder how the court could come up with the 30 million SEK figure. It’s unlikely that this money will ever be paid in damages, at least if we’re to believe the defendants who say that all the money they’ve made on the Pirate Bay has gone into investing in new equipment and bandwidth costs. At the end of the day, things aren’t likely to end here, as all four of the defendants are set to take the case to the high court in Stockholm. The Pirate Bay will hold a press conference today at 13.00 CET and a link is said to be posted on the Pirate Bay ahead of it kicking off. The Pirate Bay won’t be closing anytime soon though, at least not according to a recent statement on the site. Below are a list of damages that each of the media companies wanted from the Pirate Bay, although the court only granted them a total which was less than one third of the total claims. Damages in euro: Sony Music €41,467 Universal Music €73,782 Playground Music €28,159 Bonnier Amigo €4,290 EMI €162,988 Warner Music €146,484 Damages in SEK: Yellow Bird film 3,150,000 kr Nordisk film 225,000 kr Warner Bros 2,484,225 kr MGM and Columbia Pictures 5,579,325 kr 20th Century Fox 10.822.500 kr Warner 714,000 kr Fox och Mars media 4,495,950 kr |
Windows XP mainstream support has ended
| Written by Nedim Hadzic | |
XP nearing its demise If we didn’t know better, we’d say that Microsoft hates Windows XP these days, as many users are still choosing to stick with it and postpone the switch to Vista or Win 7 for as long as they can. Fortunately for the company, there are always ways to make the switch sooner rather than later, and the company yesterday announced that XP’s mainstream support phase has come to an end. This basically means no more non-security-related hot fixes and no free support for Win XP users, but enterprise users’ extended support phase will last until April 8, 2014, which is plenty of time to upgrade to whatever Microsoft wants them to upgrade to. We realize that switching to Vista and eventually Win 7 is of utmost importance to Microsoft, but we’d really appreciate if they could listen, and we mean really listen to their customers for once. The latest figures show that XP accounts for 62.9% global OS market share, whereas Vista is at 23.4%. Additionally, from May 2008 to March 2009, Vista snatched only 9% of XP’s share, which dropped from 72.12% to 62.9%. |

Best Buy cuts on horizon

Employees to take pay cuts to stay While there will be cuts, those will be likely restricted to senior level sales members and those being phased out by the merging of departments. Others will be affected at some point in the future if things don’t improve, and as the company predicted, severance packages will not be as generous this time around. The employees that are getting hit with the pay cuts will have Best Buy at least trying to help out by bridging the gap to help employees transition to the new pay rate. Best Buy will offer this bridging for a period of nine months. The pay cuts will start in June, but employees affected are expected to be notified shortly. While people on the outside looking in might be upset with Best Buy going to the extreme of slashing worker wages in an effort to save money, the reality is that more people would have to be let go if they did not take this action. Best Buy seems to be at least trying to do everything possible to retain as many workers as possible. |
