New Halo PC Update 1.08

August 7, 2008

See that? Good. Now bookmark this page, because you’ll have to come back here if you want to see it again. As an added treat for our loyal users still playing Halo PC after 5 years, I got clearance to discontinue the CD check as part of this patch! This doesn’t change the licensing (don’t pass around your disc), and you still need your unique product key to play online, but I figure your CD is probably pretty scratched after all this time, and it deserves a break. Anyway, on to the patch…

This is build 1.0.8.616, and is the official version of the test release from the other day. To give you confidence that you’re playing on a patched server, this build is not backwards-compatible with old servers, nor will the new server work with old clients. For this reason, I’m posting the patches here a day and a half before I’ll mark them for auto-updating in-game. This way, server operators have a little time to roll out the new bits before Friday’s auto-patch of the client.

If you haven’t been following the pre-release threads, this patch contains several fixes for server-crashing security bugs, and that’s it. As I have discussed elsewhere, anti-aimbotting is an arms race that we’re not going to enter for this old game, and this patch doesn’t address that or any other feature-level changes. I should also note that Bungie does not officially support Halo PC (which is owned by Microsoft, not Bungie) but since the build machine is under my desk and not at MS, I fixed these several bugs as a favor to the community. I can’t promise any future support, nor can I open-source the code for community development.

There are 4 patch files. If you aren’t sure which one you want, you want the first one only.

Bungie Downloads:
Halo PC 1.08 Patch
Halo PC 1.08 Dedicated Server
Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Patch
Halo Custom Edition 1.08 Dedicated Server

Gamershell Downloads:

To use the patch files, you must already have the corresponding game installed. To update your dedicated server install, just drop the appropriate file over the old one. Halo “Custom Edition” is an “unsupported” (but popular) version of the game that allows user-created maps, and is available for download from Gearbox and other mirror sites.

Remember, the game will require this patch to play online starting Friday (and I’ll update the MOTD at that time too.)

Enjoy!

This patch basically allows you to play without cd, which is great. But for users that plays halo using a pirated key it wont work. After applying the patch, the user will NOT be able to access online matches or even create a match, instead, the user will see “invalid key” and will take him to the previous screen.

For all those people who are wondering what are they going to do, here is the fix.

    - Download “Halo CE portable” from the usual places or search on google.
    - Extract the contents using Winrar or 7zip and open the launcher. It will generate the folders and you can create the shortcuts later.
    - Play freely!

By doing this you will be playing on Halo CE 1.07 and it wont update to 1.08.

I tried the 1.08, but in my opinion, its worthless to patch it, there are some AIMBOTS that works for 1.08 and there are less than 1/8 of the players that were on 1.07 version.

Well, I hope this was useful for someone

Hey, Born-do you have a problem with actually BUYING the game? I had one copy of the game for many years, and enjoyed playing. Once I got high-speed internet, though, I bought two more copies for my other two PCs so we can play online together ^_^

There is also another thing this patch does that i have worked out… you can take maps out of “MAPS” the folder and the game will still run without giving you corruption error messages… if you are wondering what the point of that is, once you have taken maps out the game loads like x10 faster depending on ur computer. Also one of my heavily modded maps that i stuffed up is now working again, YAY.
