Radeon 4870 X2 launches next week
August 6, 2008

The time of R700 has come. The Radeon 4870 X2 is launching next week and this GDDR5 card with 2GB of memory gets ATI all the attention.
It beats Geforce GTX 280 in most of the tests, but it will also have to compete with soon-to-launch GTX 280 55nm. ATI is desperate to beat Nvidia in the performance game. Radeon 4870 has really turned out better than most of us have expected and a good dual chip card is definitely something that can get performance crown back to ATI.
ATI’s secret weapon in 2GB of memory that won’t really make the card faster than 1GB version, but it will most certainly make it more desirable. From a marketing standpoint 2GB sounds two times better than 1GB, it’s as simple as that.
The new PCIe 2.0 bridge between chips should make the card a bit faster. Overall ATI feels confident about this product.
